Cleaner, Greener ESL Light Bulbs

Filed under: products — admin @ 4:38 pm

ESL doesn’t always equal English as a Second Language.  This time it is the second coming of the CFL.  It’s cleaner than a CFL and it doesn’t have to be a crazy spiral shape that makes you crave ice cream everytime you look at it. ESL actually = Electron Stimulated Luminescence.  They don’t use mercury and should be priced pretty close to a CFL.  Supposedly, they give off the same ambiance as a regular old school incandescent bulb - and are dimmable.  Pretty rockstar.  Look for them next year.

Take 2: Joe Gets Green - RECYCLE ME Organic Tees

Filed under: products — admin @ 9:07 am

Recycle Me Organic Tees
Wow - I can’t believe I left this off of my post about Joe at the Green Festival.  Joe is wearing a shirt purchased from our friends at RECYCLE ME Organic Tees.  This morning as I was getting dressed in my “Eco Dude” shirt from Alix at Recycle Me, I was thinking about how I should post about them again soon.  Then I got the comment from her on my “Joe” post.  In case you missed her comment, here it is.  It’s choc-full-o-good info:

Jason! You should have our web address on this one, so people know where they can go to get “I AM GREEN” our most popular shirt. For those of you who don’t know, it really is a green shirt, 100% organic cotton with water based dyes and inks, cotton grown, spun, sewn and printed in the USA! Watch Alter Eco July 28th, Monday night on Planet Green to see this cool shirt at Coachella, sported by co-host Boise Thomas. And July 29th, you can buy it for half off because it’s our 100th day of business. Comes in kids sizes too.

Alix - my apologies for not linking to you guys from that last post.  I’m shooting Lollapalooza again this year - maybe I’ll wear my Eco Dude shirt out an about there, too.  I have a great t-shirt idea, too - maybe I’ll pass it along to you.

Toilet + Sink = Greywater Delight

Filed under: products — admin @ 9:32 am

SinkPositive Tank Sink

I think the Starland Vocal Band said it best…”Sky rocket in flight…wheww…Greywater Delight…” or maybe I’m paraphrasing.  I finally got clearance from the tower.  I am the proud owner of a SinkPositive toilet-tank sink.  I bought it on eBay - it’s the only one I’ve seen on there before.  I guess I should be saying “we,” but we’ll see how much the wife uses it.  I wanted to put it in the half-bath on the first floor so all visitors could check it out…and subsequently think “wtf is that?”  Why it’s a sink on top of my toilet, of course.  It’s not pee water - so just wash your hands and enjoy my novelty.

As you can see from the pic, you replace the lid from your toilet with the sink.  It’s a quick attachment - you take the water hose and connect it to the spiggot and then the drain flows back into the tank.  You flush, the clean water flows, you wash your hands, brush  your teeth, get a drink, whatever.  Then the greywater goes into the tank and you flush with it.

I guess these have been readily available in other countries for years and years.  In the US, we couldn’t give a shit about conserving water as a whole.  It’s crazy how much water we just waste - greywater that could be repurposed for all kinds of things. If you use biodegradable soaps, you can even dump your laundry water right out into you flower garden - and the aphids will stay away from the soap.  Why do I need to flush my toilet with potable water?  People just don’t realize the finite amount of water - and it’s happening here - there is drought - severe drought - in many parts of the US.  Just look at DroughtMonitor.

New 3G iPhone Goes Green…Maybe Not

Filed under: business, products — admin @ 10:28 pm

Well - it actually only comes in black or white and no, I don’t have one…yet.  The packaging of the product is greener.  Apple has called upon a Dutch company called Paperfoam to make a new mold injection for the packaging tray.  The new tray isn’t plastic like the former iPhone.  It’s made from starch.  The starches are either tapioca or potato.  The potato tray reduces the carbon footprint of the packaging by over 90%.

So while the packaging is greener, the product itself may not necessarily be that green.  Greenpeace is once again criticizing Apple for not taking advantage of this huge opportunity to make their products more sustainable.

“Based on information available on Apple’s Web site, it appears the electronics company known for innovation has missed an opportunity to reinvent their new 3G iPhone, to be released July 11, in green,” Harrell said. “While new product models such as the MacBook Air and the new iMac made progress compared to previous editions in reducing toxic chemicals such as PVC [polyvinyl chloride]  and brominated flame retardants (BFR), Apple has not announced any new improvements in designing out the toxics (PVC, BFRs, antimony) that Greenpeace found present in the first-generation iPhone.”

Everything can’t be greener - I just wish Apple would have made a bit more of an effort.  They are selling like crazy - so there are tons of “packages” that are greener…and there are also tons of folks shoving toxic plastic into their orifaces filled with pthalates and PVC.  Then again, people aren’t buying an iPhone to be more sustainable.  If they wanted a phone that was going to last, they’d get a 4 year old Nokia brick.

Giveaway Time: The Green Eaters Book and Organic Tote Bag

Filed under: products — admin @ 7:39 pm

The Green EatersWho doesn’t like FREE STUFF?  Free GREEN stuff at that!  I know I do.  So here’s what we’re going to do - after this brilliant, cleverly written article about Chapter One Organics, I’m going to be giving away The Green Eaters Gift Bundle.

Chapter One Organics is primarily a clothing company for children…no, they don’t employ children, far from it.  The clothing is all made here in the good ole US of A.  They employ women who have trouble obtaining work to make their goods.  So you’re not only supporting something sustainable like buying organic cotton clothing for your kids, you’re supporting a sustainable paycheck for some deserving sole.

They have a nice selection of cool clothes for tots on their site ready for purchase or if you want to see the merch in person - head over to this section and they may be available in your area.  I think that it is very important to vote with your dollars.  Organic cotton is so much better for everyone - the land, the air, the streams, the earth, and the person wearing it.  It’s soft and cuddly and not full of pesticides.

Now let’s talk about The Green Eaters.  Rather than reinventing the wheel, this is what the site has to say:

“A fun and heart warming picture book for babies and young children that tells the story of five farm animal friends who dream of a better life outside of Dreary Day factory farm.

They dream of a better future and one day they are moved to an organic farm. They are amazed and delighted by what they find at The Green Eaters Farm. They realize this new home is where their dream comes true!

A fun and friendly way to introduce the importance of organic living to children!”

The founder of Chapter One Organics, Jennifer Murphy, penned this lovely childrens book.  For every book purchased, a tree will also be planted.  So I suggest buying enough to replant a forest. It’s a perfect gift for: your kids, your friends kids, a baby shower, a donation to a library, Christmas, Easter, Hanukka, Eid, Yom Kipur, Canada Day, Boxing Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Arbor Day…well you get the point!

GIVEAWAY TIME - HERE’S HOW IT WORKS…

Leave a comment below.  Tell me something about how you live sustainably or changes you’d like to make to your life to lead a more sustainable existence.  On July 4th, I will randomly pick a winner.  Make sure you leave a valid email address so I can contact you!

WHAT WILL I WIN?? You’ll win The Green Eaters Gift Bundle

Office Furniture Company Hires Dwight Shrute

Filed under: media, products — admin @ 9:31 pm

Rainn Wilson at Neocon Neocon, The World’s Trade Fair, began today in Chicago.  This is a pretty cool conference - a little pretentious overall - but cool.  There is a huge focus on sustainability.  Many of the companies are embracing Cradle to Cradle as well.

My first stop today was the press room.  I was happy to see that they not only had someone manning the trash station to ensure proper recycling, but they were composting as well.  The plates were compostable.  The glasses were made from PLA corn-based plastics.  The flatware was made from potato starches and fully compostable.

After that stop, I hit up a ton boothes and show rooms.  I saw everything from carpet made from recycles PET plastics, to sustainable fabrics, to plant-based foam cushioning mainly for office furniture.  I’m sure I’ll be writing more about those different products and I know I’ll have a giveaway of somekind - probably some tote bags.  Stay tuned.

So the title of this little article.  Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, was on hand to promote office furniture, I suppose.  He was recruited to be in the HON Furniture showroom.  I wrote about HON awhile back.  I’m not sure that Rainn will actually help them move any furniture or if people will even remember that they saw “Dwight Shrute” at the HON showroom.  They’ll just remember HON.  It was quite a surprise as I was being given a tour by a young girl who was barely out of college.  I’m not sure if she caught on that I really didn’t care about the latest furniture styles and designs.  I cared about their GREENGUARD certifications and what they are doing to be sustainable…then she sprung the surprise on me…”oh yeah - I wanted to show you that Rainn Wilson is here…he’s Dwight on The Office.”  I prefer to think of him as “Arthur on Six Feet Under” or closer to the heart is “he was that one celebrity blogger on that one Entourage episode.”  I think to myself - did she just say that “Dwight Shrute” is sitting 10 feet from me?  Oh - that’s what that long line is for?  I’m an indie movie fan and loved Rainn Wilson as the host of The Spirit Awards last year.  So yeah - I follow his career a bit - no intentionally - he just happens to be in good stuff - like Juno.  Anyway…

Tomorrow, I will be taking a tour of the Merchandise Mart (the home of Neocon).  The Merchandise Mart is so large that it has its own zip code - even zip+4, probably.  Anyway - why would I take a tour of this building?  It’s the largest LEED-EB Silver certified building - a retrofit, existing building, LEED certification.  I hope to provide more details on that after the tour.

PS - look for a photo gallery in the coming days.

Brita & Nalgene: Filter Water Yourself

Filed under: products — admin @ 11:35 am

brita2.jpgfilterblonde.jpg

Brita and Nalgene have teamed up on a campaign to reduce bottled water waste.  I’m not sure what to think of the ads above.  I feel that many will just dismiss them as being extremist.  Not quite as bad as red paint being thrown on a mink coat.  Although, with so many plastic water bottles going to landfill, that is a shitload of oil.  According to the site, FilterForGood.com and FastCompany - 38 million water bottles are sent to landfill annually.  If you’ve never read Message In A Bottle from Fast Company last year - then go do it now.  It’s quite the eye-opener.

Anyhoo - I thought ads were interesting and would share them with everyone.  Click on them to enlarge.  Josh Dorfman of The Lazy Environmentalist and LimeTV offers tips for “green-overs.”  Not surprisingly, you can also buy custom Nalgene water bottles from the site, too.

I could write a long time on the topic of bottled water.  For instance, the City of Chicago is saving over $400,000/year by cutting bottled water from its budget.  I’m stopping before I rant…another time.

Enjoy.

UPDATE:
Our friend, Katie, brings up a great point about Brita. In the US, they don’t take the filter back for recycling. Boo, Clorox - clean up your mess and take them back!

HEY BRITA - TAKE BACK THE FILTERS!!
