About a year ago, we wrote about the Organic Banana Project from Dole. More importantly that the project, we wrote about the consequences to the workers and the true costs involved. I stumbled upon this video from Current.com and thought it was very worthwhile for everyone to watch and learn.

Disney Nature Presents EARTH

Filed under: media — admin @ 10:22 pm

Disney is going back to nature by creating a new film label – Disneynature.  Okay – so they announced this last Earth Day and I’m late to the game – but the trailer for the new flick is out and about.  Their first feature film is aptly titled “Earth.” If the logo for “Earth” looks remarkably like “Planet Earth” series from Discovery Channel, that’s because British producer/director Alastair Fothergill was also behind that project. Checkout the trailer above and get ready for some action on Earth Day. Oh yeah – did I forget to include the fact that James Earl Jones is the narrator? Sweet.

OBAMA AGENDA: ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The energy challenges our country faces are severe and have gone unaddressed for far too long. Our addiction to foreign oil doesn’t just undermine our national security and wreak havoc on our environment — it cripples our economy and strains the budgets of working families all across America. President Obama and Vice President Biden have a comprehensive plan to invest in alternative and renewable energy, end our addiction to foreign oil, address the global climate crisis and create millions of new jobs.

The Obama-Biden comprehensive New Energy for America plan will:

  • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars — cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon — on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

Energy Plan Overview

Provide Short-term Relief to American Families

  • Crack Down on Excessive Energy Speculation.
  • Swap Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Cut Prices.

Eliminate Our Current Imports from the Middle East and Venezuela within 10 Years

  • Increase Fuel Economy Standards.
  • Get 1 Million Plug-In Hybrid Cars on the Road by 2015.
  • Create a New $7,000 Tax Credit for Purchasing Advanced Vehicles.
  • Establish a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
  • A “Use it or Lose It” Approach to Existing Oil and Gas Leases.
  • Promote the Responsible Domestic Production of Oil and Natural Gas.

Create Millions of New Green Jobs

  • Ensure 10 percent of Our Electricity Comes from Renewable Sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Deploy the Cheapest, Cleanest, Fastest Energy Source – Energy Efficiency.
  • Weatherize One Million Homes Annually.
  • Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology.
  • Prioritize the Construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline.

Reduce our Greenhouse Gas Emissions 80 Percent by 2050

  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
  • Make the U.S. a Leader on Climate Change.

BOBO Wrap Giveaway! Just In Time For Valentines Day

Filed under: products — admin @ 10:32 pm

BOBO Wrap

It’s giveaway time again!  This time we’re giving away a  BOBO Wrap. We’re just in time for Valentine’s Day.  What is a BOBO Wrap you ask?  Well, hopefully you just watched the video above on some of the different ways you can use a BOBO.  A BOBO Wrap is the earth friendly art of wrapping with fabric.  These are perfect for wrapping those sexy gifts for Valentine’s Day…

Eco-Luxe: A multi-purpose reusable accessory that is also ultra-stylish and luxurious.

User Friendly: If you can tie your shoes you can tie a wrapping scarf. In Asia, children traditionally use wrapping scarves to wrap their lunch for school.

More Convenient: No scissors, tape or other tools needed.

Multifunctioning: The wrapping scarf can wrap wine bottles, stacks of paper or a packed lunch, as easily as it can wrap gifts.

A Custom Fit: Unlike bags, the wrapping scarf adapts itself to the size and shape of the object being wrapped to create a custom fit.

Great for Small Motor Skills: Asians are famous for their dexterity with their hands. Many consider the wrapping scarf along with chopsticks to be key factors in helping develop small motor skills in children.

Sustainable: BOBO Wrapping Scarves are made in the USA in fully inspected facilities. Instead of using virgin materials to create new fabric, BOBOs are made from carefully selected fabrics that already exist in the world.

The rules are simple. Go to BOBOWrap.com, tell us what you think.  Come back. Leave a comment by 11:59PM CST, January 30, 2009 and one random lucky winner will be picked to receive a BOBO Wrap.

2010 Toyota Prius Unveiled in Detroit

Filed under: automotive — admin @ 10:32 pm

The 2010 Toyota Prius has been unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show.  Can you believe the first Prius came out in 1997? It’s so hot it looks like a Japanese Ninja busted this thing out.  It’s sleek and sexy and quite delecitble.  The main problem I see is that these same Ninjas are still limited by battery technology.  Damn you, Ninjas!  We’re stuck with nickel-metal batteries instead of the improved lithium-ion batteries.  Battery FAIL.  One optional accessory is a solar-powered moon roof which will turn on the ventilation and cool the car on a hot day while it’s parked…and you can have the A/C started with a remote – allowing the A/C to run solely on battery power.  Yay sun.  What else can we expect?

  • 50MPG fuel efficiency
  • The new Prius will offer three alternative driving modes. EV-Drive Mode allows driving on battery power alone at low speeds for about a mile, if conditions permit. There is also a Power Mode, which increases sensitivity to throttle input for a sportier feel, and an Eco Mode, which helps the driver achieve their best mileage.
  • Next-generation Intelligent Parking Assist features simplified settings to help guide the car into parking spaces.
  • Use of an electric water pump and a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system also contribute to the engine’s efficiency. The 1.8-liter Prius engine is the first Toyota power plant that requires no belts under the hood for better fuel economy and less potential maintenance.
  • The patented Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the 2010 Prius is 90 percent newly-developed with significant improvements over previous models.

Stevia Goes Big Time with Truvia and PureVia

Filed under: food — admin @ 11:29 pm

As many of you have known for the better part of a month, the FDA has approved - or not objected - to use of the herbal sweetener stevia.  Stevia has long been favored in the holistic/natural health community as a sweetener.  I’ve used it here and there.  To me, it tends to change the flavor of my coffee too much.  I prefer blue agave syrup.  Anyway…since the FDA has come out with this, I see that stevia products are being marketed.  ConAgra and Coke have Truvia on the market.  Right now, you can buy it as table-top addition – an alternative to Splenda.  Soon, Coca-Cola will begin putting Truvia in it’s beverages with “Sprite Green” and who knows what else (energy drinks, “waters” etc).  I can imagine that Truvia will be in food produced by ConAgra in the near future as well.

Don’t discount Pepsi – they have PureVia.  In South America, Coke and Pepsi have already brought some beverages to market.  I like the marketing ploy of having it’s own brand – but I guess Coke and Pepsi own a lot of brands.  PureVia is from the “Whole Earth Sweetener Company.”  Truvia goes right after Splenda in it’s not so subtle ad “Our new sweetener is more than splendid.  It’s natural.”

I’m happy that this is coming mainstream. Why not?  It seems to me that it has to be safer than Splenda or Sweet-n-Low or that blue packet.  It seems like the war is on, though. You can’t really patent stevia, so there will be some competition making it tasteless and sweeeeet.
